A set of codes and signals that allow two different PCs to communicate. A simple protocol ensures that data is correctly transferred from a PC to a printer along the printer cable. Other protocols ensure that a PC can communicate via the Internet or over a network. A protocol is like a spoken language. If you cannot get two PCs to exchange information, it's likely that they are using different protocols.
